Get Feeling Confident
Written by Lucy Bridge
We sat down with makeup artist Lucy Bridge to talk beauty. Read on to find out how makeup can be the perfect tool for enhancing natural beauty – inside and out.
What's your advice for people who want to experiment with makeup, but don't know where to start?
Less is more! Keep it simple and slowly build up your confidence with your makeup routine. Start off by mastering your skin. Skincare is a MUST, and figuring out what works for you is key. Shopping can be overwhelming, so start off with the basics. Once you have your natural everyday look locked down, you can experiment with eye colors, liners, glitter and lips. Watching online tutorials is a great way to nail makeup application basics, but the real way to learn is by practicing on yourself. The best thing about makeup: if you mess it up, just wipe it off and start over!
What are your super simple skincare routine hacks?
First of all, find out what skin type you are. I have to change my skin routine from season to season: some days just need extra moisture. Start by nailing your skincare must-haves: a good moisturizer, primer, eye cream and lip balm. Be careful not to add too many layers – your skin needs to breathe. Top hack: in winter, add a few drops of oil to your foundation for extra weather protection.
What products can't you live without?
Any form of glitter. I love adding it into my work. Primark's Glitter Fix is the best addition to a makeup kit, and amps up any look. I love liquid lipsticks too: they glide onto lips so easily and the color pigment and payoff is really strong. Primark’s Liquid Metals collection is amazing!
What beauty products make you feel instantly happier?
Anything with high-intensity color and pigment. I love experimenting with bright colors and textures, and get psyched when the color result is really bold. Whether on eyes, lips or cheeks, a subtle highlighter will always amp up any look (and – bonus! – make you smile).
What 3 changes can anyone make for an instant lift?
Switch up your eyeshadow or lipstick shades regularly so you don’t get stuck in a rut. Add some sparkle to the eyes. The Gold Rush palette is perfect for a holiday makeup bag. Push yourself out your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to experiment. Liquid Metal Lips are awesome for this.
If you're having a "meh" day, what do you grab from your makeup bag?
A face mask! After a long day at work or a lazy weekend in, a face mask can really boost your mood. Some of my faves: the Holler and Glow Sheet Mask, Super Food Sleep Mask & the Primark mud masks. I use them every week. They have such amazing benefits, and always leave my skin feeling refreshed and energized.
How do you make your skin looks its best – even when it's not?
Keeping hydrated is so important. Make sure you drink at least 2 liters of water a day – preferably more! Nutrition is super important too, so stock up on fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Brazil nuts are especially great for your hair, skin and nails – they're a perfect snack pick.
What is makeup's ultimate superpower?
Confidence! You shouldn’t use makeup as a mask, but more like a tool to bring out and define your natural features.
Liquid or pencil? Liquid on the top, pencil on the bottom.
Lipstick or gloss? Lipstick.
Full coverage or barely there? Always barely there!
Bronzer or blush? Bronzer.
Faux, or au naturel? My own, but with lots of layers of mascara!
